‘Blow Cuts’ is a collection of raw hip-hop beats with very little embellishment. They provide a blank canvas for imagination. Ideally, the listener should fill the gaps. The aim is to fuel a contemplative state of mind. These tracks were made effortlessly, during a state of flow, and it shows. Most of the samples used have been collected over the years from movies and various other sources. As an artist, Ι’m glad to have managed to produce something coherent in form and content. I enjoy visiting my Blow Cuts from time to time—when the mood is right—and Ι hope you will, too.

Berg Dorf is German and translates to “mountain village”. Berg Dorf sits high above the land on a mountain slope and gazes towards the horizon. There is very little distraction. Time runs differently in this place. After a while, all senses sharpen. They multiply the present until trivial problems start to fade. In this state of mind, music is created.

Description
Complexity is the seed of all beauty. Sweet, sacred complexity. Structure upon structure; forming, spreading, disassembling. Complexity is the mother of all life. Loving, nourishing complexity. Networks of networks; winding, braiding, intertwining. Complexity is the key to simplicity. Eternal, primordial complexity. Numbers encode numbers; transforming, convolving, multiplexing. Complexity is the essence in experience. Stretchy, squelchy complexity.
Sounds inside sounds; melting, crumbling, coalescing.

“Biga, a DJ, producer and vinyl collector hailing from Florence (Italy), immediately grabbed my attention. His new album B Sides displays a blend of contemporary and vintage sounds. There are absolutely no barriers in his sample selection. The only downside to this album is the brief length of just over 20 minutes, but that can be compensated by pressing the repeat button!” - The Find

There are no barriers in his selections, apart from maintaining the same attitude he’s had during the past decade: never stop following the newest evolutions of music coming from Europe and the US and keep the sound of DJ sets and productions fresh and up-to-date. Massive international record digging during the last years has assisted his endeavors.

Good Luck Knowing
Description
The futuristic, yet low-tech, metropolis is always alive. Mechanoids, automatons and robots of all sizes, shapes and colors move around constantly, sometimes crashing into each other, creating ever-evolving patterns. The city is tiny; so tiny that it can fit on the tip of a needle. Among the inhabitants there are also tiny humans, people like you and me. On sunny days, they go out to meet each other, make friends, fall in love. In the eternally changing scenery, the buzz of the city becomes their soundtrack: the whirrs of moving parts turn into leads and pads, the rhythmic sounds of switches and locks transform to complex syncopated beats and the roar of motors provides the bassline. On sunny days, the tiny people sing and dance to this soundtrack, while the entire city flows in the background.

Ride With Me
Description
The sun is already shining but somehow you’ve managed to stay lucid. What a night! You grab a bite on the way to work, where the same old shit is waiting for you. But no biggie, even the neurotic manager deserves a smile today. You whistle some funky tunes from last night and tap your favorite breakbeats on the side of the keyboard with your fingers, while the hours go by. Back on the streets, that new sub you got for your car really pays off. Who cares about the traffic jam when those walking basslines sound so smooth? After a quick jam in the studio, you’re back at your place. The answering machine light is flashing: you - have - one - new - messages. You listen to her badly recorded voice asking where you’ve been and why you didn’t call. But no time for that now. You hit the road again, this time with your record bag hanging on your shoulder. The place is already full, all the familiar good old faces are there. A soft brass passage emerges from the vinyl crackle, the singer starts humming a tune, singing about a long lost love, people are dancing their worries away and finally you feel at home. Here we go again…

GDaddie (born Michael Papoulakos) is an electronic music producer without any precise orientation from Athens, Greece. His first attempts at producing were highly influenced by the jazz, funk and rock sounds of the ’60s and ’70s combining beats and bass sounds from the Bristol area of the late ’90s. His first EP “Gone” was released by Dusted Wax Kingdom in 2009 under the alias “Gonex3″ (3-times-gone) and received good reviews from the local press and worldwide webzines, and thus giving the opportunity to participate in festivals like the International Film Festival in Thessaloniki and the STFU festival in Heidelberg. In the annual list of best Greek artist releases in webzine mic.gr Gone EP reached No. 5. His second EP “The Truth” (January 2011), again released on DWK, was a transitional release, released under a new alias, a slight turn into more psychedelic soundscapes and a much heavier approach on beats and trippy basslines.

GDaddie has also appeared on memoryformat as Bad Ratio, dropping an apocalyptic hurricane of breakbeats, metal riffs and ragga vocals in mfm06.

Bits Is All There Is
Description
Eskaei never finished a single piece of music. He has sampled a few crates of records and sequenced a few hundred beats and basslines. He started putting together an album some years ago. The process got interrupted and the material for it was abandoned on tapes, samplers and computers. Until today it laid there fragmented like the ruins of a deserted village in a barren landscape. Now everything apart from a few bits of that album has been cast into oblivion. These bits are presented here, as an impression of what that album would have been. It is good it is so, Eskaei feels, even though these are all that is left of his half-finished music.

Description
The first light of the day seen through a dirty old shaft in Kypseli. A morning breeze carrying the smell of humans during a bus ride from Kaniggos square to Patisia. The roar of a thousand motors heard from an office on the 12th floor, while the buildings in the city center, painted orange by the pollution-screened light of the evening sun, seem to be abandoned for decades. A glimpse of the sunset right before a big iron door closes behind you, as you descend into a gray basement in Ampelokipi.

Sister Overdrive is a neo-romanticist in Athens city. Each piece of Retroversion consists of minimalist melodies layered on top of each other, like dreams for the future, formed gradually from hopes and ambitions, and syncopated, rasping rhythms, which remind me of how the dreams of people are crushed by other people in a colorless urban background. And how they are made again.

Lowend Psychopathology
Description
The following archive describes a mental malfunction caused by a long period of sleep deprivation. The subject is experiencing temporary breakdowns of the brain’s cognitive system, which lead to hallucination. Although the subject has conscious awareness of the environment, fictitious situations unravel in the subject’s subconscious and intertwine with reality, to the point where they become indistinguishable. Sometimes the subject is under the impression that there’s a presence or movement of other beings in the same space and tries to interact with them. The subject’s reactions suggest that ambient sounds are disproportionally amplified within the brain and a non-existent, low-pitched growl is heard and felt very intensely.

Tokyo Mask’s latest outing for Memoryformat.net entitled Lowend Psychopathology does exactly what it sets to accomplish; Cold Meat Industry-flavored dark ambience with a pinch of elevated basslines gone awry. “Obsession One,” the featured track –and its sister “Obsession Two,” both cultivate a groove that is unlike any other. Fine tuned transmissions of tempered quality brush up against subtle 4/4 beats, rusted drones and dismayed frequencies amounting to a fluid work of audio art. While somewhat difficult to describe in print, Tokyo Mask unleashes what could only be termed as disturbingly delightful mayhem.” - Igloomag

Tokyo Mask live at DeciBELIO 2006 (youtube vid)

artist press coverage

Tokyo Mask produces the most eerie, dark and almost ghoulishly sombre trip hop imaginable. An echoing construction of various layers of noise, keyboards, static interference, rain sounds and lots of sounds that aren’t but have the effect of rain, and very big beats. And I mean really big beats. Vast and monstrously expanding drums and snares, ornamented with some glitches here and there, that move slowly but steadily from fade in to fade out. - Monochrom

Guttural beats growl while sludge-laden vocal effects struggle to break free of the mire. Echoes of Scorn, Mothboy and Godflesh even surge through Tokyo Mask, but there’s both more and less here: more static, less movement. - Igloo

(…) despite his sound’s primal qualities – its grinding power and stinging claustrophobia – a certain penetrable, loose, even strangely ambient aesthetic remains ever-present, with each listen granting a new, slightly tilted perspective. - Cyclic Defrost

(…) his main source of influence are avantgarde noise and ghoulish dub – even if they, too, have only left faint traces on the simple but incredibly hypnotic beats, leaning on straightforward hihatpatterns and a plentitude of tiny polyrhythmic percussive particles, as well as streaks of sinister drones, which are occasionally left to pulsate on their own for a few minutes. - Tokafi

In general, Tokyo Mask’s music presents a harrowing and nightmarish dub mutation that simulates a disorientated Opium-induced state. - Textura

Description
It’s the simple things that matter. You’ve probably spotted this motto, maybe a bit rephrased, in a ton of ads. Indeed, being able to appreciate simple things in life is a big deal. But what if simplicity is a train you’ve missed, like some of us have? This question fuels my thoughts when I’m listening to Lemon Kiss. The strangest thing is that between the dub atmospherics, intricate sampling work and lush synthlines of this album, the answer to the above question is partially revealed to me. I can’t say it’s a happy one. It feels sad but warm, painful but valuable, fucked up but liberating. Big Fat Lips, with a little help from Sister Overdrive, has given a justification for the melancholy in my thoughts.

Bow Down
Description
“There’s a threat in the world today; a threat to our way of living a threat to our society and maybe even a threat to our very existence…". Homophobia, misogyny, promiscuity, lack of morality, racism, violence, materialism: gangsta rap. Although it had been declared “dead” by one of its creators back in 1995, an album released a year later, beginning with the words quoted above, proved that the most notorious music genre was still alive. Hundreds of hardcore rap LPs have been produced since then, several of which were claimed to have the same “gangsta thang” going on. Fans of the genre worldwide didn’t seem to agree. Even the same group’s following works didn’t live up to the expectations and the 1996 LP is considered by many the last trace of true gangsta rap. Ten years later, an individual decided it’s time to bring some gangsta flavor back in the underground. The goal was to catch the original vibe from back then, reform and re-present it in a modern package, as a tribute to gangsterism. And thus, “Bow Down” was reborn. The threat is once again in the world… Downloads

Eskaei is the moniker he uses to present his boom bap-derived, electronically severed, instrumental hip-hop hybrid. A deep fascination for the properties of electronically generated sounds and love for the old true-school hip-hop albums have been his main influences for this project.

He has been a member of the netlabel scene since 2005 and has released music under various aliases on several netlabels. He founded memoryformat in 2006.
